I don’t like my birthday. I rarely got to celebrate it in school because the summer break usually started a week before March 29. As I didn’t have parties, I didn’t get to see my friends during my birthday. Those rare times that the school year DID extend until March 31 and I had to go to school on March 29, people wouldn’t even know that it was my birthday. And then (although this is extreeeemely petty), people started teasing me because my birthday’s so early in the year. They called me old. The reason this got to me is a lot of (okay, most of) the people born after I was (hence, people younger than me) are taller, and height’s always been kind of a sensitive issue for me.
I remember giving too much thought to every little thing when I was younger. I wanted everything about me to be special. For example, I found March 29 - my birthday - extremely corny. I wanted to be born on some holiday, like April 9 (Araw ng Kagitingan). Or Christmas. But not some humdrum day like March 29.
So, for this assignment, I Googled “March 29, 1994” to see what would come up. Sadly, I found that the day was quite an uneventful day in other parts of the world, too. I did find, however, that 1994 wasn’t a boring year.
Two days later, on March 31, 1994, the first Australopithicus skull was discovered in Ethiopia, and I found that interesting because I remember reading about it for my social studies class in high school. A little under a week later, Kurt Cobain (vocalist of one of my favorite bands, Nirvana) was found dead. And, in July, the 1994 FIFA World Cup was held in Brazil (I’m pointing this out because I like football).
